Networking: Building Your Tribe for Personal and Professional Growth

At RECHARGE Dublin 2024, Gillian Hennessy shared her insight and experience in building a network - as an avid Networker (with a capital N as she’s a longstanding member of Network Ireland). Gillian, Head of Marketing, Development & Box Office at Triskel Arts Centre in Cork City, shared her approach to networking, emphasising the importance of building genuine connections that recharge and enrich both personal and professional life. With a background in book publishing and a longstanding commitment to fostering connections, Gillian is passionate about helping others navigate the networking world in ways that feel both natural and impactful.

We hugely enjoyed her talk - and found it super helpful, so wanted to share some of her key takeaways:

Why Finding Your "Why" Matters

Everyone comes to networking with different goals. Some seek professional growth, while others crave social interaction or personal support. Knowing why you’re there is crucial, as it helps focus your energy on connections that matter. Ask yourself what you hope to gain: inspiration, friendship, mentorship, or a new perspective. With this clarity, networking becomes far more rewarding and targeted.

Approaching Networking Your Way

Networking isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some people are comfortable jumping into group conversations, while others prefer smaller, one-on-one meetups. Regardless of your style, the approach should feel natural and comfortable to you. There’s no “wrong” way to network—only what works best for you. If a particular style or event structure doesn’t feel right, trust that instinct and seek spaces where you feel energised rather than pressured.

The Power of Asking for Help

One of the most powerful aspects of networking is finding people you can turn to for support. Asking for help can feel vulnerable, but it’s often a source of strength. In challenging times, like during the pandemic, networks became a lifeline for sharing ideas, supporting each other, and finding solutions together. A strong network means knowing there’s a group you can reach out to, no matter how big or small the question.

Getting Comfortable with Growth

Growth in networking often comes from stepping slightly out of your comfort zone—or, as some coaches suggest, into your “stretch zone.” Rather than pushing to the point of discomfort, thinking of it as stretching allows people to focus on growth without feeling overwhelmed. Setting achievable goals and taking gradual steps each day, like improving by just 1%, can make networking and personal development feel far more attainable.

Productivity and Setting Boundaries

A big part of sustainable networking is managing your energy and time. Productivity experts often advise viewing your inbox as someone else’s to-do list, reminding us to focus on our own priorities first. Building boundaries around work—like only checking emails during set times—can protect your focus and reduce stress.

Another helpful strategy is dedicating a set amount of time each day for deep, focused work. By setting boundaries around work hours and tasks, you create space for recharging and ensure you’re managing your energy effectively.

Embracing Opportunities and Building Lasting Connections

Networking ultimately pushes you to grow, take on new opportunities, and expand your horizons. Along the way, it teaches you to rely on others, to stretch and grow, and to find strength in community. When you build a supportive network, you create a source of advice, encouragement, and collaboration that benefits both your personal and professional life.

In the end, networking isn’t about getting ahead alone; it’s about growing alongside others, sharing experiences, and finding people who challenge and support you. By approaching networking with authenticity and an open mind, you’re building not just connections, but a foundation for meaningful growth and lasting relationships.
