Marriage Equality: Gay Marriage Referendum Passes by a Landslide

What has put Ireland in the history books is how our legalisation for gay marriage came to be, not through legislation - which is how most countries have legalised gay marriage - but through a popular vote.

Thousands flew into Ireland from America, Canada, Australia and the UK to ensure their voices were heard. And they were. We have been perceived across the globe as a conservative nation, where the Catholic church still holds sway in daily life. This popular vote shows what we Irish have always known - we are a progressive nation, tolerant, compassionate and inclusive. Social change started a long time ago here, and we will continue to build on the sea change that has begun.

Today Ireland made history, Prime Minister Enda Kenny said at a news conference, adding that in the privacy of the ballot box, the people made a public statement.

This decision makes every citizen equal and I believe it will strengthen the institution of marriage, Mr. Kenny said.

1.2 million people voted in favour of changing Ireland's constitution to be more inclusive.
